Everyday Encounter...

I don't listen to the radio in the car at the moment. It's normally audio books. Sometimes I get in the car and the radio is on though. I have no idea how my car radio picks stations, but somehow it's been "Capital" recently. Anyway, I jumped in the car and this version of this song was playing: As I listened to it I imagined it was blending the story of Jesus with someone absorbed in a "night out" culture. When I got home I decided to look up the lyrics and see if there was an acoustic version I might appreciate more musically. Here's what I found: You must have noticed the difference... Uncomfortable much!?
So it was just about Jesus. I'm not sure how I feel about Jesus doing cocaine on a night out. I've got nothing against Jesus being on a night out, if that's what floats his boat... It's more about what I perceive to be the need for Jesus to be in control of himself for the benefit of others, which by my understanding isn't necessarily conducive with drugs. It's interesting which bits of Jesus' character and story get brought out in this one though. Which other cultures could we drop Jesus into and imagine the interaction? Are there other things we wouldn't want to picture Jesus doing? Where has his story infiltrated the minds of other artists? Could we use this song to start a discussion about Jesus and culture with young people?
